The Future of School Accountability in Indiana: Third Public Comment Period

In Indiana, we are laser-focused on ensuring more students have access to the knowledge, skills, and experiences they need now and in the future. The vision is clear: develop an accountability model in Indiana that values all the characteristics essential to student success, as well as every student’s unique pathway.

In June 2025, the Indiana State Board of Education (SBOE) initiated a collaborative and iterative process to refocus the future of K-12 accountability in Indiana. The proposed new accountability model would align school accountability with the five characteristics that Hoosiers consistently agree are most important to a student’s lifelong success:

Academic Mastery
Career & Postsecondary Readiness: Credentials & Experiences
Communication & Collaboration
Work Ethic
Civic, Financial, & Digital Literacy

Based on these characteristics, Indiana’s new accountability model elevates both traditional academic outcomes, as well as skill development.

Public comment will continue through January 5, 2026. The public is encouraged to provide feedback on the draft rule via the Jotform below and can also provide in-person comments at a public hearing on January 5, 2026. This public hearing will take place at 11 a.m. ET in the Indiana Government Center South, Conference Room D. The final draft is anticipated to be adopted in January 2026.
